Docmost vs Confluence: free Docmost covers the core wiki; Confluence adds page permissions, Jira, apps and mobile

Docmost is an open source wiki that looks and works a lot like Confluence. Its free Community edition covers writing, organizing, sharing per space, page history and search. Page-level permissions, single sign-on and the API need a paid Docmost license, and there's no Jira integration, app marketplace or mobile app. Below is each area with a link to the vendor's own docs, then what each option costs at 10, 25 and 50 people.

"Paid" means Docmost's Business or Enterprise edition, which you install on your own server. Docmost Business is $6 per seat a month billed annually, with a 10-seat minimum, per Docmost's pricing page. Page templates, Word export, the Confluence importer and turning off public sharing are paid too; the free edition's Markdown and HTML zip import can bring in a Confluence HTML export, keeping less of the structure than the paid importer.

Editor

Both editors are block-based, with slash commands, tables, callouts and real-time co-editing. Docmost edits live in every edition (Docmost pricing). Confluence's live docs allow up to 40 people editing at once (Atlassian).

Docmost includes draw.io, Excalidraw and Mermaid at no extra cost; draw.io loads from diagrams.net unless you host your own (Docmost diagrams docs). Confluence has native whiteboards, and draw.io is a third-party Marketplace app with its own price. Docmost's databases (Bases) and Kanban boards are paid.

Page tree and spaces

Both organize pages into spaces with a nested page tree you can drag to rearrange (Docmost pages docs). Docmost allows unlimited spaces in every edition (Docmost pricing), and Confluence allows unlimited spaces and pages, even on Free (Atlassian plans). Docmost's personal spaces are paid.

Permissions

Docmost Community gives each space three roles, Full Access, Can Edit and Viewer, and lets you assign them to groups (Docmost spaces docs). Restricting a single page needs a Business or Enterprise license (Docmost page permissions).

Confluence has space permissions and page restrictions on Standard and above. On Free, "You can't restrict access to content" (Atlassian).

Comments

Docmost has inline comments on selected text in every edition. Resolving a comment is paid, and Docmost's docs describe only inline comments, not comments on the page as a whole (Docmost pages docs). Confluence has both inline and page-level comments (Atlassian).

Page history

Docmost saves versions automatically while you edit, lets you restore any of them, and since 0.96.0 compares two versions, all in the free edition (Docmost pages docs, release notes). Confluence keeps a version per publish, compares versions, and restores an old one as the newest version (Atlassian).

Search

Docmost's free edition searches the full text of pages using its PostgreSQL database (Docmost configuration docs). Searching inside PDFs and Word files is paid. Confluence search covers attachments including Word, PowerPoint, Excel and PDF (Atlassian).

Integrations

This is Confluence's biggest advantage. Jira issues render inside pages through the Jira work items macro (Atlassian), and the Atlassian Marketplace adds thousands of apps. Docmost has no app marketplace and no Jira integration in its docs. It embeds Figma, Miro, Loom, YouTube, Airtable and Google Docs, Sheets and Drive, and its roadmap lists Slack, GitHub and GitLab integrations for the fourth quarter of 2026.

Single sign-on and two-step sign-in

Docmost supports SAML 2.0, OIDC and LDAP on a paid license. Its pricing page lists them under Business, while its SAML docs say Enterprise, so confirm with Docmost before buying Business for SSO. SCIM is Enterprise only, and Docmost's own two-step sign-in is paid (Docmost MFA docs).

Confluence's SAML single sign-on needs the paid Atlassian Guard Standard add-on, except on Enterprise where it's included (Atlassian). Admins can require two-step verification on every plan (Atlassian).

API

Docmost added a public REST API in version 0.70.0 in March 2026 (roadmap). API keys need a paid license: the pricing page lists them under Business, but the API docs say Enterprise, so confirm with Docmost before buying Business for API access. Confluence Cloud's REST API works on every plan with an API token (Atlassian developer docs).

Self-hosting

Docmost is built to be self-hosted. Docker is the recommended install, with PostgreSQL and Redis alongside it (Docmost install guide). The core is open source under the AGPL 3.0, and the paid features sit in separately licensed folders (Docmost on GitHub).

Confluence Cloud runs only on Atlassian's servers. Atlassian's self-managed product, Data Center, goes read-only on March 28, 2029 (our Data Center end-of-life guide).

What Docmost doesn't have

Paid Docmost also lacks some things Confluence Standard includes: audit logs are Enterprise only, and AI needs your own provider, such as OpenAI or a local model (Docmost AI docs). Confluence Standard includes Atlassian's Rovo AI.

Confluence: Standard is $7.15 per user a month billed monthly from October 13, 2026 ($6.70 before), from Atlassian's list price tables. Paying yearly from that date costs $720 for 10 users, $1,800 for 25 and $3,600 for 50, shown above per month. Confluence Free covers up to 10 users, with 2 GB of storage and no permissions. Docmost Business: $6 per seat a month billed annually, 10 seats minimum. Server: Hetzner's CX23, with 2 vCPUs and 4 GB of memory, or a similar small server; the CX23 lists at €5.49 a month before VAT and an IPv4 address (Hetzner specs, Hetzner prices). That size is our assumption, since Docmost publishes no minimum. Tablewide: monthly price before tax, with unlimited users; paying yearly gets two months free.

Storage: Confluence Standard includes 250 GB and Free 2 GB (Atlassian plans; more in Confluence storage limits). Tablewide Team includes 25 GB; Business is $99 a month with 100 GB and Company $199 with 500 GB. Self-hosted Docmost is limited by your disk.

The server is the small part of self-hosting. Someone has to apply Docmost updates, run and test backups, renew HTTPS and set up sign-in and email, every month. If nobody on your team wants that job, or you'd rather not pay per person, Tablewide runs Docmost for you at one flat price for the whole company. It's Docmost's free Community edition, so none of the paid features above are included: access is set per space, and sign-in is through Google. See hosted Docmost for what's in and out, and how to move from Confluence to Docmost if you'd rather do it yourself.

What you give up with Tablewide, compared with Confluence Standard:

Because it's standard Docmost, you can export your pages as Markdown or HTML at any time and import them into a Docmost you run yourself. Like any export, that carries the pages, not their history or comments.

To try it, start a free preview: you upload a Confluence HTML export and see it as your wiki. If your team uses Google Workspace you can start it yourself right away; through the form, it's ready within two business days of your upload. Comments, page history, permissions, original authors and dates don't move.

28 seconds, no sound: the start-now preview for Google Workspace teams. You upload a Confluence HTML export and it opens as your wiki. This sample is 4 made-up pages; bigger spaces take longer. Through the form, your preview is ready within two business days of your upload. Comments, page history, permissions, original authors and dates don't come across.
