How to export Confluence to Word

Atlassian's steps for Word export cover a single page. On Cloud, open the page and choose •••, hover over Export, then choose Export to Word. On Data Center, choose Tools, then Export to Word. For a whole space, Atlassian's export steps offer PDF, HTML and XML (plus CSV on Cloud) and no Word option, though its help pages mention Word among the export formats. Atlassian says the Word file opens only in Microsoft Word, not in LibreOffice, OpenOffice or Google Docs. Below are the steps, the limits, and what to do when you need more than one page.

Moving your Confluence pages to another wiki? Tablewide is a hosted wiki, built on Docmost, at one flat price per company with unlimited users, from $49 a month (Team, 25 GB). If your company is outside the EEA, UK and Switzerland, get a free preview of one Confluence space from a Confluence export: private, no card, and the preview and your upload are deleted 7 days after it's created unless you subscribe (what we keep, and for how long). If your company is in the EEA, UK or Switzerland, use the form and don't upload an export.

Tablewide is an independent service. We are not affiliated with, sponsored by or endorsed by Docmost, Inc. or the Docmost project.

Export a Confluence page to Word on Cloud

  1. Go to the page, live doc or blog post.
  2. Choose ••• and hover over Export.
  3. Choose Export to Word.

Atlassian suggests this for sending a page to people without Confluence access; space-wide exports are for space admins. Only the published version is exported, so unpublished changes aren't in the file, and you can export while people are still editing. Atlassian says standard Word exports come out in portrait, and changing the orientation means customizing the export. Your organisation's admins can also block exports.

Export a Confluence page to Word on Data Center

  1. Go to the page.
  2. Choose Tools, then Export to Word.

Anyone who can view the page can do this. You get a .doc file of the published version. Only the first 50 images attached to the page are included; Atlassian says the limit prevents out-of-memory errors affecting the whole site, and points to an issue (CONFSERVER-34211) that explains how to raise it temporarily with a system property.

Can I export a whole Confluence space to Word?

Not with Atlassian's built-in exports, as far as its documentation shows. Both of Atlassian's export pages open by saying content can be exported to formats including Microsoft Word, but the space export steps list PDF, CSV, HTML and XML on Cloud, and HTML, PDF and XML on Data Center. Word appears only in the single-page steps. Space exports need a space admin on Cloud, or the Export Space permission on Data Center, so if you don't have that, ask a space admin or export page by page. If you need more than one page:

When Word is the wrong format

A Word file suits one page you want to edit or send to someone outside Confluence. It's a poor way to move to another wiki: you get one separate file per page, and Atlassian says the file only opens in Microsoft Word. To move pages or keep a copy of a whole space, export it to HTML (a zipped archive of the pages, which is what our free preview takes) or XML (which Atlassian's Cloud docs say works best for importing into a Confluence Data Center instance). Export all Confluence spaces covers whole-site exports, and Confluence to Markdown covers converting pages to text files. Whatever you export, keep it, and keep your Confluence site, until you've checked the copy.

Moving off Confluence?

Tablewide runs Docmost, an open source wiki, at one flat price with unlimited users, from $49 a month. The free preview takes a Confluence HTML export (not a Word file) of one space and puts it into a private Docmost wiki, with no card. The preview is deleted after 7 days unless you subscribe (what we keep, and for how long, is under Before you upload, below). Comments, page history and permissions don't come across from a Confluence export, and formatting, macros and attachments may not transfer exactly. Through the form, we aim to have your preview ready within two business days of your upload, on a best-efforts basis. The preview terms also say where your export is stored.

Before you upload: your export holds your company's pages, so check that you're allowed to share them outside the company, including any personal data about people in the EEA, UK or Switzerland. If your organisation is in the EEA, UK or Switzerland, please don't upload an export; we may be able to build your preview from your public pages instead. The preview wiki, any copy we made of your public pages and your export are deleted 7 days after the preview is created, unless you subscribe or we agree in writing to extend it (to no more than 30 days after creation), and you can ask us to delete them sooner at any time at [email protected]. Backup copies roll off within 30 days after deletion. One exception: our AI agents' working records (session histories) keep copies of what they read about your preview: content from your public pages or, if you ask them to look at it, your export, anything you send them, and our own offer and import reports. We have no set deletion schedule for these, so they are kept until we delete them. If you ask at [email protected], we delete them within 30 days and our AI provider removes them within a further 30 days under its own terms (preview terms, P5; privacy policy, Section 4).

Organizations in the EEA, UK or Switzerland: please use the form and don't upload an export. We'll email you an offer to build your preview from your public pages (our AI agents read those pages to write it, and what they read can stay in their working records with our AI provider; nothing is built on our servers until you say yes), or tell you if that isn't possible (preview terms).
