Confluence Data Center to Cloud: what you'll pay and what changes
Confluence Data Center goes read-only at end of life on March 28, 2029, and existing customers can't buy new subscriptions, apps or a bigger tier after March 30, 2028 (Atlassian's migration page). Atlassian's answer is Confluence Cloud. For most small teams Cloud costs far less than a Data Center renewal: $37,000 a year buys the smallest Data Center tier, while 50 people pay $3,600 to $8,460 a year on Cloud at list price. But the bill now grows with every person, some things you ran yourself move to Atlassian, and some apps and settings cost extra. Here are the numbers at 25, 50, 100 and 250 users, and what changes.
What Cloud costs a Data Center team
| Users | Data Center (smallest tier on sale, list, per year) | Cloud Standard per year | Cloud Premium per year | Tablewide per year (wiki only) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 25 | $37,000 | $1,800 yearly · $2,145 monthly | $3,550 yearly · $4,230 monthly | from $588 |
| 50 | $37,000 | $3,600 yearly · $4,290 monthly | $7,100 yearly · $8,460 monthly | from $588 |
| 100 | $37,000 | $7,200 yearly · $8,580 monthly | $14,000 yearly · $16,920 monthly | from $588 |
| 250 | $37,000 | $17,500 yearly (300-user tier) · $18,390 monthly | $33,500 yearly (300-user tier) · $35,280 monthly | from $588 |
US dollar list prices. Data Center from Atlassian's Data Center pricing tables: the smallest tier is 500 users, effective February 17, 2026, and your renewal quote may differ. Cloud from Atlassian's licensing price table, effective October 13, 2026. "Yearly" is the annual subscription for the next user tier up (25, 50, 100 or 300 users); "monthly" is twelve months billed monthly at $7.15 or $14.10 a user up to 100 users and $5.45 or $10.20 from 101 to 250. Cloud prices are before add-ons such as Atlassian Guard and Marketplace apps. Tablewide is a flat $49, $99 or $199 a month, billed monthly, with unlimited users; the plan you need depends on storage (25, 100 or 500 GB), not headcount, so check how much your attachments take up first. It is a simpler wiki with fewer admin and security features than Confluence, listed below. Try your own numbers in the cost calculator.
What changes when you move to Cloud
- You pay per user. Data Center charges for a 500-user tier however many of those seats you use. Cloud charges for each person, so the bill grows with every hire. Atlassian's current Cloud list prices took effect on October 13, 2026 (the Cloud price increase).
- Atlassian runs the servers and the upgrades. No more patching, but you no longer choose when changes arrive, and you lose direct database access and your own server-side plugins.
- Apps. Some Data Center apps have no Cloud version. Those that do are billed per user for everyone on your Confluence plan. Check each app before you set a date.
- Single sign-on. Single sign-on with your own identity provider needs an Atlassian Guard subscription, billed per user on top of Confluence.
- Data residency. On Standard, Premium and Enterprise you can pin your Confluence data to a location such as the USA, the EU or the UK (Atlassian's data residency page). The Free plan can't.
- Storage. 250 GB on Standard, unlimited on Premium (Confluence storage limits).
- The move itself. Atlassian's Confluence Cloud Migration Assistant moves spaces, users and groups, and the connectors between Data Center and Cloud run until end of life, so you can move in phases. Test with one space first.
Standard or Premium?
In our view, most small Data Center teams fit Standard. Premium roughly doubles the price for unlimited storage, more admin controls and analytics. Our Standard vs Premium comparison has the details.
If you don't need Confluence itself
Moving off Data Center is a chance to check whether your team needs everything Confluence does. If you mainly need a fast wiki for docs, a hosted open source wiki costs a flat price whatever your headcount.
Tablewide runs Docmost's free Community Edition for $49, $99 or $199 a month (plans), with unlimited users and US hosting (EU not live yet). If you subscribe, we move your Confluence spaces for free, on a best-efforts basis, with our own importer (terms). Because it's open source, you can export your spaces and self-host Docmost. How we run it: security and data.
Docmost is simpler than Confluence. It has no Marketplace apps, and some Confluence macros become plain content. Docmost's Community Edition leaves out page-level permissions, single sign-on with your own identity provider, multi-factor authentication, templates, audit logs and API keys; Docmost lists those in its paid editions. Access is set per space, so a page restricted in Confluence becomes readable by everyone who can open its space; put restricted pages in a separate space before you move. What moves from Confluence, and what doesn't.
